Abstract
We investigated the distribution of surface meteorological observation stations in northern part of Yamaguchi Prefecture. In addition to seven stations operated by the Japan Meteorological Agency, we found 122 surface meteorological stations operated by the Ministry of Construction, local government, transportation companies and by others. Half of them are registered at the Shimonoseki Local Meteorological Observatory, but the others are not. The precipitation distribution during the passage of typhoon 9709 was mapped using data from these stations. The existence of a localized heavy precipitation area extending from Mutsumi Village to the east part of Abu Town was clearly shown with data from these stations, which cannot be resolved comprehensively using data from meteorological agency stations only. It must be noted, however, that the observations made by various stations not under the Japan Meteorological Agency tend to be concentrated in urban areas. In the case of Mine City, five surface stations exist in a 0.5 km by 0.5 km area. In such case, it is beneficial to exchange data between stations for quality assurance and for complement of data lack. We recommend the establishment of a data exchange system between different owners of the various observation stations.
