Abstract

Two kinds of numerical scores for evaluating daily living disruption in earthquake disasters were developed and utilized in a comparative study among six municipal areas affected in the 1995 Hyogo-ken-nanbu, Japan, earthquake. The scores with and without cumulative nature were named average and cumulative living disruption, respectively. The study areas were two wards of the city of Kobe, four cities in the Osaka-Kobe area, and a rural town on Awaji island. Household scores were determined through a household-by-household questionnaire survey, and their fundamental characteristics were statistically examined in relation with building damage, lifeline suspension, and household characteristics in terms of the dependence on lifeline services. Regional scores for each of the seven study areas were determined from household scores and compared across the survey area. Significance of the numerical scores was discussed from the view point of numerical approach to disaster studies and practice.
