(2) Some Considerations Based on Statistic and Crop Scientific Informations from Sakurajima Island

Abstract

It was found from time trend of crop yields at Sakurajima-Town and geographical distribution of increased percentage of crop yield in Kagoshima Prefecture that the crop production in and around Sakurajima has been severely affected by the ash fall.
Between the stomatal conductance and the distance from a volcanic crater, a clear relationship could not be found. But, when the volcanic ash accumulated on leaf surface, a considerable rise in leaf temperature was observed, and then numerous fruit drops happened in mandarin orange. Some advantages of the simplified soil admixing, in which normal soil is arranged concentrically around the main root of a crop, were reconfirmed in on-the-spot examination. From these statistic and crop scientific informations from Sakurajima Island, the occurrence mechanisms of crop growth damage due to ash fall and some cultural countermeasures were discussed.
