Abstract

The dimensions and hydraulic characteristics of a snow drain system as well as the efficiency of its snow removal operation were surveyed in the city of Ojiya, Niigata Prefecture, where heavy snowfall occurs. Four kinds of stagnation of snow and water flow were observed and classified. An empirical formula was developed for one type of stagnation. The friction coefficient of the snow running down the drain was found to be more than ten times that of the water.
