Abstract

Housing sites recently developed in the suburbs of Sendai were heavily shaken by the Off-Miyagi Earthquake on June 12, 1978, the houses on the sites being severely damaged. These damages were concentrated on the sites where deep valleys had been filled by volcanic ash soils without sufficient compaction. Extensive soil explorations, soil tests and soil dynamic analys were performed in order to investigate the stability of the slopes and causes of the ground failures. Conclusions based on these results are presented in this paper.
