Abstract

Flood damages closely related to the accumulated effects of river improvement works and land development in a catchment basin. The study of flood damage can benefit from a knowledge on the history of former river improvement projects, the land use, and the flood damage records.

Using as an example the Tone River, which is one of the most important rivers in Japan, the authors have made a chronological table on flooding in the past four centuries and have recorded the changing nature of flood damages over time.

Key words
