COSEISMIC DISPLACEMENT AT KOBE UNIVERSITY IN THE HYOGOKEN-NAMBU EARTHQUAKE (JAN. 17, 1995) OBSERVED BY GPS MEASUREMENTS

Abstract

We have determined the coseismic displacement of the Kobe University GPS station at the time of the Hyogoken-nambu earthquake (January 17, 1995) from GPS observations referenced to the Mino GPS station before and after the earthquake. An eastward displacement of 60±4 mm, a northward displacement of 15±6 mm, and an upward displacement of 66±11 mm were found at the Kobe University GPS station during the periods of November 15-18, 1994 and January 19-22, 1995. Although we could not correct for ionospheric delay effects in our processing, it is suggested that a fault or faults southeast of Kobe University was displaced right-laterally by no more than a few tens of centimeters.
