Abstract

Through a questionnaire completed by survivors of the 1943 Tottori earthquake (M 7.2), the physical damage caused and resulting human behavior were investigated. The questionnaire consisted of 35 questions in a number of categories: l) the relationship between strong ground motion and soil damage, 2) damage to the respondents' houses, 3) human behavior during and after the earthquake, and 4) the repair of collapsed buildings. Quantitative data on the locations of soil liquefaction and human behavior during strong motion were obtained which have not been considered previously in drawing up earthquake countermeasures.
