Abstract
The Nipponkai-chubu earthquake of May 26 1983 with magnitude 7.7 on the Richter scale occurred about l00 km off the west coast of Akita Prefecture (138゜54' E 40゜24' N) . The earthquake caused much havoc in thirteen prefectures from Hokkaido to Yamaguchi Prefecture but mostly in coast districts in Akita and Aomori Prefectures. Lifeline systems were also damaged extensively. Lifeline systems are necessary to the sustenance and well being of human life.
The object of this paper is to give an outline of the damage to lifeline systems and their rastoration. On the basis of the field investigation, the following teachings may be drawn:
(1) It is necessary to establish the countermeasure of mitigating the damage of lifelines due to soil liquefaction.
(2) Soil liquefaction potential against earthquakes must be evaluated.
(3) The measure of emergency water supply without water wagons must be discussed.
