Abstract

Factor analysis was applied to 20 variables related to urban activities, road facilities and snow for 78 cities in the Tohoku District, including Niigata Prefecture. Six regional characteristics were found. Using cluster analysis, we could classify the cities into 6 groups according to regional characteristics. The classification of these cities by the "Act on Special Measures for Snowy Areas" (1962) was then examined by discriminant analysis.
